But getting genuine, good-quality links – together with high search engine rankings high for specific phrases – is the only game in town. All other forms of promotion really do seem miles behind in terms of return-on-investment.

Why are good links so important? It’s worth keeping in mind that good links are the internet equivalent of word-of-mouth recommendations. People really take notice of independent recommendations, especially if they come from someone trusted. And we all see through fake ones. That’s why we don’t believe everything adverts tell us, but we do take notice when a good friend tells us about a product they liked. The web is no different.

Tip: Don’t waste time on other forms of promotion without first concentrating most of your efforts on link-building and ranking high on search engines.

I made a Christmas present for my younger brother. It was a set of Russian Matryoshka dolls that I painted to look like characters from Star Wars. As an after-thought, I posted them up in the blog section of my site, and it got a huge response.

So think of something that’s related to what you do. Something remarkable or cool. Make a video, or post it up. Then see what happens. You might like to notify bookmarking sites like digg.com or reddit. Just this morning I was recommended a link to someone who had made a printer out of LEGO, using a felt-tip for the ink head. It was a cool video, and it’s just the kind of thing that people tell each other about.

Create other quality sites – It may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes, owning other websites can really be a boost. And of course, you can give yourself a ringing endorsement, but only after you have proven your authority on the subject.

Building a simple information site on a very specific niche subject doesn’t have to take long. The design needn’t be complex (take this one for example). It’s the information that’s of primary concern.

Think about a company website that sells a wide range of electronic gadgets. Trying to fit lots of articles into an already crowded shop site might not be very clever or useful. But if the owner were to create a specific niche information website all about one particular type of gadget, e.g. MP3 players, then she’d have a much better chance of reaching people who genuinely are seeking some assistance. By helping them out in an informational way, it’s a fairly straight forward process of mentioning that the reason you’re such an expert on MP3 players is because it’s your job to sell them. “And here’s a little link to my shop…”

By proving your authority, and not just hitting people with a sales pitch, you can win the trust of your readers and offer them a way to purchase what they need.

Answer people’s questions – If you are an authority on something related to your website, then show off your knowledge (but in a positive way). Whilst spam commenting is NOT the way to go, you can do a lot of good with a bit of know-how.

People everywhere are asking for help. On forums, in blogs, on sites such as Yahoo’s “Answers”. Why not join a small handful of them and offer your help. Don’t just shamelessly plug your website. Don’t even mention it directly. Simply address the person’s question as helpfully and as authoritatively as possible. Then, if the website allows, include a modest link or mention of your site in your signature. Sign off something like this:

You’d be surprised how quickly you can gain respect, simply by being respectfully helpful.

Credit links - If you already offer a service or product that other website owners are using, you might like to offer it for free or at a discounted rate, if they provide a footnote link at the bottom of their pages. This is something web designers regularly do. It’s a credit link, and it demonstrates that a website thinks highly enough of you to have actually used your services.

Offer a cool prize - Perhaps you want a new slogan for your website, or would like ideas for a new product. Companies can always use quality input from their customer base in one form or another. So why not offer a juicy prize for the best entrant? Contact blogs or news sites that are related to your niche and let them know about your competition. “Since your site covers gadgets, I was wondering whether your readers might be interested in knowing that we are running a competition at the moment to design a new advert for our latest product. The prize is a free MP3 player…” With any luck, if the blogger genuinely thinks this will be of interest to his readers, he might give you a mention in his next post. And you can use this same competition to contact as many different websites as you wish.

Start with a thank you page. Let your customer know that you received their request and reinforce what they have purchased or subscribe to. It is also appropriate here to ask for a confirmation to ensure compliance with any anti spam laws.

If you are not going to ask for a confirmation then provide a link to the product or service. Make sure you have them white list your email so that future correspondence does not end up in the junk.

The first email should be sent immediately after your customer took action. Welcome them again and re-assure them that they have made a good decision in purchasing your product or service. Again give them access to any download links and ask them to keep this email for future reference.

In the second email you should start with mentioning the product or service again and give a bit more detail on what they can expect from you in the future. This is a great way to start branding yourself and building your relationship with them.

In the third email you can begin to recommend other products or services you offer as well as other affiliates. If you start too soon pitching a product you run the risk of offending your new customer.

The forth email should be nothing more than an offer to assist them in anyway you can. Give them multiple ways to contact you and make VERY sure you let them know they are a valued customer.

Finally continue with this format for -well forever if you like or until they unsubscribe. It is very important to balance help and knowledge with sales offers. Keep all your correspondence casual not stuffy, and be honest. This is all about relationship building.

Follow these few simple suggestions and you will build a list of responsive buyers any top marketer will envy.

For example, here’s an excellent follow-up sequence you should use after they signup for your list or buy a product…

Message 1 (Instant) – Send them a download link to the product, thank them for their purchase or signup and give them a way to contact you for help, support or questions. This can be simply saying “reply to this e-mail for assistance” or a link to a support desk.

Message 2 (3 Days After First Message) – Ask them if they were able to download the product okay and let them know that you are available for any questions they may have and let them know how to get in contact with you again.

Message 3 – (10 Days After First Message) – Point to a great benefit/feature of the product that they just got from you and tell them specifically how to enjoy that benefit. If it’s an eBook, tell them the page number and where to read the information they can use. If it’s a physical product, describe how to do something specifically that helps them.

Message 4 – (20 Days After First Message) – This message is meant to cover common questions that someone might have about your product. If you don’t’ have any questions or if your product is still new, you will want to go through your product and think what a customer may ask and write these down. Another option is to check out the websites of competing products and see if they have an common questions listed that you can use to mold your own.

On the other hand, if you have questions that people have sent you regarding your product that you have answers, simply gather the questions and answers and arrange them into a message.

This message is meant to address any blocks that the customer may be having regarding the use or consumption of the product that they just haven’t had the time to ask.

Message 5 – (30 Days After First Message) – This message should contain a bonus. Now, whatever you are selling, whether it be a digital or physical product, I always recommend the bonus be digital. Why? You can offer some information that enriches the use of their product and helps them get more out of it while delivering it in a way that costs nothing to product or deliver.

The best part is that they get this instantly. I also recommend that you setup a sales page that shows that you are really selling the bonus so that they get the feeling of “getting something paid for free” rather than just getting something that someone specifically created to be a freebie.

Okay, this month long sequence of messages is what I like to call “nurturing the customer”. In the first month you don’t try to sell them anything. You help them by making sure that they got their product, helping them consume it or use it and also answer any questions or concerns that they may have. You cap it all off with a bonus that further increases the value that they received out of your and makes them an even more satisfied customer.
